Welcome back to Day 29 of 31 Days to a Life of Purpose!
Today, I want to share with you what I am doing to keep on track with where my life is going. Each evening, I have been pausing for a time of reflection about my day. I mentioned this in a post earlier this month. During this time of reflection, I ask myself 4 questions:
What went well today?
I want to acknowledge my successes. Even on days when I am struggling, I try to look for something positive. I reflect on my time spent with God and with my family. I consider how I spent my time and what I accomplished in comparison with what I set out to do for the day. I want to recognize the steps that are helping me to pursue my goals.
What didn’t go well today?
I try to recognize the opportunities to improve on the mistakes I’ve made. Focusing on the negative can derail my sense of purpose, so I don’t want to chalk these mistakes up as failures.
Who do I want to be tomorrow?
I think about what characteristics I hope to exhibit and what attitude I would like to work towards.
What do I need to do tomorrow?
By creating a to-do list the night before, I can wake up with a sense of purpose because I have already outlined tasks I need to complete for the day to continue moving towards my goals.
Spending a few moments each evening writing out the answers to these questions and then praying over them has certainly made a difference in my life. I use this exercise as a catalyst for an honest conversation with God, who already knows how my day has gone. This has taken me further in my relationship with God as I have transitioned from a “wish list” prayer into an actual conversation with my Heavenly Father. I also feel more aware of my actions throughout the day because I know I will take the time to reflect on them in the evening and I don’t want to have any regrets. I would much rather the answer to what went well today be longer than the answer to what didn’t.
Reflection is necessary in living with purpose. When we are caught up in a series of activities to the point that we are just going through the motions, we lose our sense of self-awareness that is necessary to live intentionally. My hope is that this exercise might greatly benefit you as well. I have created a printable to help you in having your own time of personal reflection.
I wish you all the best in your pursuit of a life of purpose!
