Welcome back to our monthly series on Goals! Today, we are talking about what it means to create a meaningful goal and why it matters for your success.
My one word for last year was purpose. At the time I chose the word, I was struggling to find direction for my life. As I processed many different things last year, my purpose became clear to me, but I wasn’t getting anywhere with it. I didn’t know what I needed to do to actually start living it.
During a writing workshop last fall, I finally knew my purpose was to inspire and encourage women to create purpose and peace in their lives. I justĀ didn’t know where to start. My one word for this year – move – came from a desire to start living into my purpose.
Without action, knowing my purpose really didn’t mean much. Goal-setting allowed me to start taking steps, slowly at first, but the momentum keeps building. I started leading a Bible study (both here on the blogĀ and at my church). I began planning a women’s conference which will take place in February. This past Sunday, I was asked to take over the women’s ministry at my church, and now the possibilities seem endless. I am also able to update my goals to keep moving.
Goal-Setting helps you accomplish your purpose.
Living with intention requires purpose and action. Goal-setting identifies the actions that allow us to pursue purpose. Knowing I wanted to help women wasn’t enough. I had to know what to do (setting a goal) and actually do it (creating a plan).
This month, I have stressed planning your time with your goals in mind. I create weekly plans in my bullet journal. Each weekly plan includes boxes for my most important tasks and my goals for the week. What is entered into those boxes usually comes directly from reviewing my yearly goals. My 2017 goals in all 12 areas are listed in my bullet journal so that I can easily review them, making it easy to schedule tasks for my week. Without goals, we aren’t aiming at anything with our lives. Goals give our lives direction.
Have you been able to identify your purpose? What actions can you take this week that help you live it out?
On Thursday, we will look at breaking long-term goals into smaller tasks, making them easier to accomplish. See you then!
