I mentioned last week that I am focusing my design efforts on the rooms that matter most to me in our home. I want to share the progress with you as I go. I’ll be working room-by-room to get things in shape.
I’ve started with the master bedroom mostly because it has been the easiest and I could quickly see the impact of my efforts in here. Here’s how it started:
The picture quality isn’t great (I took them as a reminder just for me before this post was ever a thought), but as you can see, it’s pretty sparse. It’s a large room but I think the beige walls make it look rather boring, especially when there’s nothing hanging on the walls.
One major step for this room was to declutter. The closets were overloaded and there were still several boxes and suitcases in the room, most of which you can’t see from the above pictures. I did a total closet overhaul, donating eight bags worth of clothes, emptied out all the boxes, and stored the empty suitcases upstairs.
My first major decorating change was bedding. I chose almost everything you see here from Target (the yellow bird pillow is from Kohl’s). I love the color, the vintage wash, and the weight of the comforter, but my favorite purchase is definitely the square pillows with the swirly designs. They were a little pricey ($35 each) but they are without a doubt my favorite things in the room. They are down pillows, so when I lay on them, I just sink into them, but they hold their shape really well. Luckily, we had gift cards to cover the cost of all the bedding, including a new fuzzy blanket.
Next I focused on improving the lighting. The bedside lamps were on our wedding registry, and when I went to buy them with gift cards, they were on clearance! And only at the store I stopped at, which is a location I never go to. I’ve been to two other Targets since then and the lamps were full price at those locations. The lampshades were also on clearance. I love the neutral color yet they still have texture to them with a floral design stitched in white thread. I also bought a floor lamp for the seating area by the window. I do Bible study here every morning and having the extra light really helps as the light coming theough the window is not quite bright enough in the morning to read without a lamp.
Other changes so far include new blinds, which we found for a great price at Ollie’s (quite possibly my deal-loving husband’s favorite store ever). We also put in a new white dresser (pictured above) but haven’t managed to move the old one out yet. The new dresser was part of a larger furniture set I broke up and scattered pieces throughout the house.
Future plans
- This room is getting a paint job! I’ve already purchased the paint and was hoping to paint the room while my husband is out of town this week, but ended up getting sick. Hopefully, I will be able to do it in the next couple of weeks.
- The little side table by the rocking chair is getting a makeover. I’m really excited about my plans for this table because I’ve never actually DIY’d a piece of furniture. Check back next week for the details on that, as well as to see the end result.
- Lastly, I want to hang pictures and curtains. Our wedding pictures arrived this week, which included a canvas portrait I intend to hang in here.
