Have you ever thought about what you would like to be known for? What will your legacy be? I am so very lucky to have a grandmother who has shown me what it looks like to leave a legacy of faith.
My grandmother, or Mamaw as she’s known to me, turned 88 last week! She is still in good health and is able to live on her own. She would still mow her own yard if my brother would let her, and would still walk to the post office if my uncle wouldn’t find out.
I spent almost every Friday night at her house growing up. I stayed with her during the day when school was out and my parents were at work, and I rode the bus to her house after school throughout elementary school. She was part of my everyday life as a child. I built forts in her living room and developed a love of cream of wheat and fried chicken (not together) at her kitchen table. More importantly, I learned how to live my faith.
I watched Mamaw get up in the morning and sit in the overstuffed tan chair by the front door where she would read her Bible, every day without fail. She taught me to read the Bible, too, and sat with me as I read John 1 over and over because I loved the cadence of that passage. My understanding of the passage came later, but I developed a routine of reading the Bible for myself because of Mamaw.
She also taught me to pray. Every night she sits on the edge of her bed and prays for everyone in our family and any other prayer requests she knows of. When I talk with her on the phone even now, she tells me she’ll pray for any difficult situation I mention, and I have no doubt she will.
I bought Mamaw the book Jesus Calling by Sarah Young for Christmas last year. She reads the devotions daily and has told me several times how much she enjoys it. Even at 88 years of age she is still actively working to grow her faith.
When I think of what I want my legacy to be, my grandmother is my greatest role model. I want others to know my faith is so important to me. When I tell someone I will pray for them, I want them to know I mean it. I want to continue actively growing in my faith my whole life.
I would love to hear your stories! Is there someone in your life who has served as a role model for the legacy you hope to leave? What do you hope to be known for?
