There is something so refreshing and promising about a new year. New Year’s resolutions are testaments of our desire to change, grow, and generally become better versions of ourselves. We usually start the year with such gusto that quickly deflates as life goes on and is still filled with dirty laundry and dirty dishes.
We often become so distracted by the busyness of our lives that we lose sight of what brings us joy and of the hopes and dreams we have for a promising new year. The distractions might even be good or necessary things like caring for our families, but sometimes we need to be reminded to take time for ourselves and focus on our own spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being.
Let this be the “Year of Joy” – the year where we focus on our joys. Irritations and distractions will still come. It’s part of life, but we must choose how to handle those times and not let them dampen our spirits. Be reassured by Psalm 16:11: ““You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (ESV) We can find this joyfulness even in the midst of our struggles.
Over the next year, I will be posting about joy – what distracts from it and how we remember it. I hope you’ll join in the journey towards a year of joy!
