I know I said I was only going to post for Blogging Through the Bible twice a week, but I didn’t want to miss out on the short books we are reading this week, and if I wait until Friday, we will have moved on to Psalms even and I will have skipped over Jude too!
When others observe your life, what would they have to say about it? Would they recognize you as a true follower of Christ? Would your life be worth noting?
I love 3 John for how personal it is. While John also writes with such a tender regard for his recipients, 3 John is unique in that it is written to an individual – Gaius.
We know very little of Gaius, as he only appears in 3 John, but John speaks very highly of him. Word of Gaius’ faithfulness has reached John and compelled John to write. John considers it “no greater joy” (3 Jn 1:4) to hear how those he oversees strive towards righteousness by walking in truth. Gaius is also commended for his care and support of missionaries.
While we know little of Gaius, John points to the things that are most important. We can choose to spend our lives working towards the wrong things, or we can choose to work for the Kingdom of God, laying us treasures in heaven as Jesus encourages in Mt 6:19-20.
I hope the little book of 3 John helps you in your walk with God. Will you get distracted from the truth, or will you, like Gaius, live a life worth noting?
