When pursuing a life of purpose, the most important task I can do is to spend time daily in God’s Word. I have struggled in the past with making this a consistent habit, but in September of this year, something clicked, and it’s like clockwork each day – I must make time to be with God, listening to what He has to say and praying for direction in my life.
I love resources that foster the discipline of daily Bible reading and urge biblical study and application. Sadly, these resources are few and far between. Oh, there are plenty of devotional books out there, but many give a heartwarming story with a Bible verse tacked on at the end. We are falsely led to believe this fulfills our biblical quota for the day because of the way these books are presented. Resources that encourage daily interaction with the Scriptures on a deeper level are far more rare.
I was so excited to receive a copy of The Devotional for Women this week, because it fits all of the criteria I look for in a devotional, and is also beautifully designed.
The Devotional for Women emphasizes Scripture-reading, not just devotional reading.
Each day has a passage to be read outside of the devotional book.
The Devotional for Women addresses every book in the Bible.
This might be my favorite aspect of the book. Day 1 starts with Genesis and Day 366 ends with Revelation. Through the course of the year, every single book of the Bible is addressed. This is crucial to me in truly gaining an understanding of the Bible. God gave us the Bible in its entirety because there is something to be learned from every part of it. The Bible is also one story – it is the story of a loving God who sets out to redeem His creation. It is the greatest story ever told, and the only way to get the whole story is to read all of it.
The Devotional for Women includes daily application.
Each day’s reading breaks down the assigned Scripture passage so that readers will better understand it and then provides practical application for daily life. All while maintaining the integrity of the passage and the Bible as a whole.
The Devotional for Women is for women of any level of biblical knowledge, from those just being introduced to the Bible to those who have studied it for years.
The Bible is a BIG book. It can be daunting to many who try to read it. This devotional focuses on understanding one short passage at a time, but also covers every book of the Bible during the year. This format is great for those who are just beginning to read and study the Bible because it addresses the whole Bible without being overwhelming. It is also great for those who have studied the Bible for a long time because it is easy to fall into the habit of focusing on parts of Scripture that seem to have the most to teach us (such as the Old Testament) while shying away from the more difficult books of the Bible or those that seem less relevant (but really are just as valuable to understanding the whole story).
The Devotional for Women was written by an amazing team of women.
Many of the women involved in the writing of this book come from the Biblical academic world and have a love for teaching and understanding the Scriptures. Each of these women have a strong desire that other women know and understand the Bible so that they may have a true relationship with God.
I cannot recommend this resource enough. I want to be personally immersed in Scripture to gain a deep understanding of the story found there, and I want the same for all women. I will be gifting this to many of the women in my life for Christmas because the greatest gift I know to give them is a resource to foster their relationship with God.
I received a copy of The Devotional for Women from the publisher as part of the B&H Bloggers program, however, all thoughts and opinions are my own. This is a truly fantastic resource that I hope you will check out!
