At church yesterday, my pastor challenged the congregation with prayer commitment cards as part of a stewardship campaign. David has been such a blessing to the church since arriving in June, and has strongly encouraged attendees to grow in their relationships with God. Many people who attend church do not have an active prayer life. Reasons for this often include not really knowing how to pray or not understanding the benefits and effects of prayer. Yesterday, everyone was given a card with several options ranging from “I’m not ready to commit” to committing to pray in worship, facing difficult situations, once daily, or 15 minutes a day. The last commitment option was this:
“Prayer will be a priority in my life, growing to include the following:
I will surround my family and friends with prayer. I will surround my church with prayer. Through prayer, I will find strength, power and direction to face the week. Through prayer, I will trust God with my life, my family, my job, my finances, and my immediate and eternal future. Through prayer, I will learn to love God with all my heart and to love my neighbors.”
This commitment is not unique to our church. In searching, I found it is one many churches have recommended. How dramatically would our outlooks changes, if this is the commitment we made. I hope that today you will seek to make prayer a priority in your life, growing in your relationship with God and entrusting Him with the details of your life.
