Welcome back to 31 Days to Less Stress! We’re back to Get Clean Thursday! I hope your 15-minute daily deep clean is going well. Falling behind? Try setting a reminder on your phone to go off at the time that works best for you to stop and clean for a few minutes.
Today we’re going to talk about creating a landing space. You know — the catch-all space were purses, keys, phones, papers, mail, and everything else that is in your hands when you walk in the door collects.
Having a landing space is necessary because it’s where most of your important items will end up. Ever spent time looking for your keys? Phone? Yesterday’s mail? Your daughter’s field trip form? Creating a landing space will help you stay organized and keep all of those important items in one place.
My landing space started out like this:
Some days it may still look like this, but the key is to keep it organized. When you come in each day, only put the necessary items in your landing space. Everything else needs to find another home. Junk mail can go in the trash. The hat needs to go in the closet. My shopping basket needs to go back in the car so I won’t forget it when I go to the store (as I did when I went to the store where the above plastic bag came from).
Clearing this space only takes a few minutes and leaves me with this…
…a space free of the clutter that elevates my stress.
So what should this space look like for you? Here are some recommendations:
- Choose a space that is close to where you enter the house, or is where you currently unload everything in your hands when you walk in. The kitchen often works if you can secure a small area, but if you already lack counter space, think of another place.
- Use some kind of organizer where you can keep up with small items such as pens, along with important papers. Mine is from Mary and Martha.
- Choose an area near an outlet so that items that need to charge can stay there.
Setting up a landing space is easy, and maintaining it takes only a few minutes a day. It’s another step in creating a less-stressed environment for yourself!
